Chapter Eleven

A couple weeks in Thailand was exactly what we needed. We considered it part alone time for us, and also part graduation present. Quentin told his parents that he was going canoeing in the Boundary Waters with some friends from work so he would be off the grid for the duration of our travels. Since he’d traveled there before, he knew all the things we should and shouldn’t pack with us. We decided to pack light and spend only a day or two in various towns from the capital city of Bangkok in the center of the country, over to the old capital of Ayutthaya, down the coastal city of Pattaya, and then back up again. I was surprised to learn that it was as large as it was, about the size of Texas, and anticipated this vacation with every mile closer to our destination. We had plans to see the countryside, and I was looking forward to him leading the way on our new adventure.

We left ungodly early in the morning for the first flight. I’d never been on a plane for over three hours at a time, and we were scheduled for a series of flights just to get to our destination. The first flight was from Minneapolis to Los Angeles, and I thought that had been long at about five hours, but I had yet to experience the thirteen-hour transpacific flight. The second and longest flight included a layover in Taipei, Taiwan, which I thought had the most beautiful architecture I’d ever seen in an airport. The lines of the buildings were at abstract angles, and tall plants were everywhere, reminding me that I wasn’t in the United States anymore.

I felt excitement from this grand adventure, and I could see the tension leaving Quentin. The closer we came to our destination, his shoulders appeared a little less tense and the lines in his forehead eased just a bit more. Tiny increments but they were noticeable to me. During the first flight, he was rigid in his seat and wouldn’t share an armrest, let alone allow our shoulders or knees to touch when we were seated. On the last leg of the flights, he shared a blanket with me and occasionally would brush against my elbow. During the final five-hour leg into Bangkok, I sat near the window and he leaned over to point out some of the landmarks during our descent. I was surprised how much he’d changed as we crossed borders and time zones. It was simply remarkable.

We discussed plans during the long line through immigration, and before long, we were thrust into the heat and humidity of the city and into the back of a taxi. It was exhilarating flying along in the tiny car amid the traffic, where the laws of the road seemed to be merely suggestions rather than requirements. The sight of an entire family on the back of a tiny scooter was something I had to capture on camera. Quentin’s
